Japan’s Quiet Influence on Global Fashion
So, my Japan trip was absolutely epic! So much so that we’re already planning our next one. If you’re interested in the food, transportation, or travel logistics, I will be writing a separate piece for that.
I landed at Narita Airport, jet-lagged but buzzing with excitement. As soon as I stepped off the plane, I saw a girl who looked like she had just walked out of a L’Officiel editorial—effortlessly chic in sweatpants, Maison Margiela Tabis, and a cozy collared cotton shirt layered under a trench coat. Her suitcase was completely basic, but she was carrying the large metallic Chanel Classic Flap—the ultimate statement that said, “I know ball.” That’s when I knew: Japan was going to be different.
Throughout the trip, I saw men and women in the chicest elevated looks and outfits that looked cozy yet intentional. None of the usual airport uniform of leggings and a crewneck. Everyone looked like they had their own sense of identity, expressed through clean silhouettes, layered textures, and perfectly tailored details.
I saw every style imaginable—from Harajuku girls in (again) Maison Margiela Tabis and oversized jackets to men in Shinjuku wearing sharp suits paired with the coolest statement bags.
And let me just say—the men in Japan have style. The kind of style that makes you want to hand them your credit card and say, “Go ahead, style me.” You think men in Paris have style? They do, but this was on another level. It makes sense when you realize that while most malls around the world are centered around women, in Japan, there are entire malls dedicated just to men’s fashion.
And of course, we shopped. With the dollar stronger than the yen (plus tax-free shopping!), let’s just say we did some serious damage. Clothes, accessories—you name it, we didn’t let a suitcase limit stop us. And here’s the insider tip I almost gatekept everything that’s sold out here in the States is in stock there. It’s like fashion heaven. I pushed my bank account to the limit, but honestly? No regrets.
By now, I’m sure most of you have seen the Pinterest boards titled “What to Wear in Japan.” Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. I’ve linked all the core pieces inspired by the coolest boys and girls in Japan, with practicality and comfort in mind. Because fashion there isn’t just about looking good—it’s about living in it.
And because I love you all, here’s a little promise: I’ll be going back to Japan in 2026, and I’m going to do my best to capture even more photos of these fashion icons for you. The streets there are like a runway and next time, I’m documenting even more than last time.
